
Michigan Handed First Home Loss of Season by No. 2 TCU

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2 ranked TCU men's tennis team snapped the 13th ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team's home win streak after a 4-0 score on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines (5-3) had a 12-game winning streak at home before facing the team that ended their season in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Horned Frogs returned four of their six from last season, while Michigan lost four of its six.
TCU (6-0) took the doubles point as Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth fell to the No. 8-ranked doubles team of Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives at No. 1. It was even at 2-2 before the Horned Frogs took got the break point and used the momentum. Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul also came up short at No. 2 doubles in a 6-2 decision.
Hanchaikul and Cooksey rebounded in singles play as each won their opening sets. Hanchaikul, ranked No. 125, took a 6-4 match off of No. 39 Gorzney 6-4, winning three break points -- including two in the final three games at No. 4 singles.
On the next court, Bickersteth won a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak in his first set at No. 2 versus No. 4-ranked Jack Pinnington. Bickersteth controlled the tiebreak, taking a 3-1 lead. At 4-3, Bickersteth rattled off the last three points to clinch the set.
Both matches would end incomplete, however, as No. 20 Vives defeated Nino Ehrenschneider 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to give the Horned Frogs a 2-0 lead. Bjorn Swenson, who had a 3-0 lead on No. 59 Lui Maxted at No. 5, ultimately fell 6-4, 6-1. No. 62 Fearnley took matching 6-2 sets from No. 17-ranked Young at No. 1 to clinch the match for TCU.
Michigan begins play at the ITA Indoor National Championship on Friday (Feb. 16) against Wake Forest. The teams will take to the courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at 6:30 p.m.
