Michigan Falls Short at Buzzer Against Arkansas at Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team dropped an 89-87 contest to Arkansas on Tuesday night (Dec. 10) in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
Leaders and Best
Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf led the Wolverines in scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Each added nine rebounds, with Wolf also totaling nine assists. Roddy Gayle Jr. and Will Tschetter each posted had 13 points on the night. Nimari Burnett chipped in 10 points.
Second Half
Arkansas (8-3), trailing 49-45 at halftime, kicked off the second half on a 12-0 run, keeping Michigan (8-2) scoreless for four and a half minutes until an and-one dunk by Goldin snapped the skid, but the Razorbacks led 57-51. At the 13:58 mark, Goldin and Tre Donaldson each tallied three points to get the Wolverines back to within seven, 62-55.
Goldin and Wolf continued to work off one another. A Goldin dunk assisted by Wolf was followed by a second-chance Goldin dunk with 6:11 remaining to cut the U-M deficit to 80-74. Wolf tallied his eighth assist to bring the Wolverines within ten at 3:51.
Trailing by five with just under two minutes left in regulation, Michigan cut the lead to one, 88-87, behind Donaldson and Gayle splitting free throws and a second-chance layup from Wolf with 1:28 to play.
The Wolverines fouled Arkansas' Trevon Brazile twice, with 32 and 14 seconds respectively, but he missed three of the four free-throw attempts -- including the final one, which was rebounded by Wolf and with 3.7 seconds on the clock, Dusty May called timeout with U-M trailing 89-87.
When play resumed, Wolf received the inbound pass and fired a pass to Gayle near the basket, but it was tapped out near the free-throw line, where he gathered it and launched a turnaround jumper that hit the front of the rim as time expired.
First Half
Michigan got off to a slow start with only five points over the first five minutes of the game, but Arkansas held just a 6-5 lead. A Burnett layup at 12:41 gave the Wolverines an 11-8 advantage.
At the 10:09 mark, a three-pointer by Will Tschetter, his second straight and eighth straight point of the game in a one-minute span, pushed the Wolverines' lead to 12 points, 24-12. Back-and-forth points by Gayle and Tschetter increased the Michigan advantage to 14 at 33-19 with seven minutes left in the half.
A number of Arkansas answers to Michigan runs brought the Razorbacks within four at the end of the half, 49-45. U-M shot 58 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, while Arkansas shot 36 percent from three-point range.
What's Next
On Wednesday, Dec. 18 U-M will take on No. 13 Oklahoma in the Jumpman Invitational at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. Opening tip is set for 9 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Notes
• Michigan's loss ended its seven-game win streak -- its longest since opening the 2020-21 season on an 11-game run. It also snapped an 11-game win streak at Madison Square Garden, which began in 2012.
• Justin Pippen scored his first career points with a three-pointer in the first half. He had missed his previous four field-goal attempts.
• Sam Walters snapped a 0-for-11 drought from the field and a 0-for-10 streak from long range with a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the first half.
• Tschetter recorded his fourth double-figure game this season and also posted back-to-back games of 13-plus points and three three-pointers.
• Wolf collected a career-best six assists in the first half. Tonght's game marks the fifth time in his career with five-plus assists and is his fifth game this season with four-plus assists.
