Young Qualifies for NCAA Singles Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas -- University of Michigan senior Gavin Young qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship on Saturday (Nov. 9) while competing at the ITA Sectional Championships on the campus of Texas Christian University.
The Apple Valley, Minnesota, native defeated Max Sheldon (Michigan State) in three sets, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5, in the round of 32 before taking out No. 114-ranked Anton Shepp (Nebraska) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. He secured his spot in the NCAAs with a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 41-ranked Isaac Becroft (Oklahoma State) in the quarterfinals. Young withdrew from the semifinal due to injury.
Young and doubles partner Bjorn Swenson also withdrew from the doubles semifinal. The pair defeated Becroft/Alessio Basile (Oklahoma State) 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 before downing No. 54-ranked Sheldon/Matthew Forbes (Michigan State) 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Young and Benjamin Kittay have already qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
Swenson reached the semifinals of the singles consolation bracket, ultimately falling in a 10-point tiebreaker to Louis Bowden (Baylor) 1-6, 6-1, 10-5. He earned wins over Bowden's teammate Marko Miladinovic in two sets and No. 113-ranked Bryce Nakashima (Ohio State) 7-5, 4-6, 10-4.
Patorn Hanchaikul split his two singles matches, earning a win over No. 89-ranked Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes (Oklahoma) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The NCAA Individual Championships begin Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Waco, Texas.
