
Young Takes No. 1 Seed to Three Sets but Falls at NCAA Singles

WACO, Texas -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team took the overall No. 1 seed Sebastian Gorzny of the University of Texas to three sets at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships but lost the third set on Tuesday (Nov. 19) in the opening round at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Going serve-for-serve in the first set, it was Young that broke Gorzny in the 12th game to earn the 7-5 win. Gorzny returned the favor with a break to open the second set and take a 2-0 lead. Young came back in the third game, putting up two aces to get on the board at 2-1. The pair went the rest of set holding serve with Gorzny using a two-game upper hand to his advantage in the 6-4 victory.
In the decisive third set, Gorzny started with a 3-0 lead with two service breaks. Young answered with a break of his own and then won a perfect service game to sit one game back at 3-2. The two traded games with Gorzny leading, 5-4, and serving. He took advantage of the service and won on deuce point to clinch the match.
Young and Gorzny will be teammates in two weeks' time, as it was announced Monday (Nov. 18) both will be on Team USA at the Master'U BNP Paribas Championship in France.
On Wednesday (Nov. 20), Young and doubles partner Benjamin Kittay will begin NCAA Doubles Championship play against Notre Dame's Peter Nad and Sebastian Dominko at 2:30 p.m. CST.
