COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 7-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to No. 1-seeded Ohio State, 1-0, in the Big Ten Tournament final on Sunday (Nov. 17) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The two teams tied with 12 shots each, with the Buckeyes holding a 7-5 edge in shots on target. Bryce Blevins paced the Wolverines with seven shots, three of them on frame. Isaiah Goldson returned to start in net for the Maize and Blue and notched six saves.
Michigan (8-4-7, 2-3-5 Big Ten) dominated the first half, out-shooting the Buckeyes 8-1, with four shots on target. Blevins was responsible for four shots, two of which were on frame.
True to form, Michigan created chances early as Jason Bucknor and Blevins had good looks at the net in the second minute, but the Ohio State defense blocked both attempts. In the 28th minute, Blevins looped a ball toward the net that OSU goalkeeper Max Trejo parried away for a corner. Michigan created another chance in the 36th minute with a free ball in the middle of the penalty box that Will Baker tracked down, but the Buckeye defense saved the shot, keeping the game scoreless heading into halftime.
In the second half, Blevins added another shot on target before the Buckeyes responded with four consecutive shots. Blevins had another open look in the 67th minute, but the graduate student's shot sailed just over the crossbar. Ohio State found the first score of the game in the 73rd minute as Parker Grinstead's shot found the upper portion of the net to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Ohio State (14-1-3, 7-1-2 Big Ten) thought it had a chance to add another in the 84th minute after a penalty was called, but the call was overturned after review, keeping it a 1-0 game. Ohio State was able to keep Michigan out of the back of the net over the final six minutes to secure the win.
Up next, Michigan will wait to hear if and when it will play during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will air on Monday (Nov. 18) at 1 p.m.
