SAVOY, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team finished ninth at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Nov. 1) at the Orange and Blue Golf Course.
Oregon (33 points) won the Big Ten crown in its first year in the conference, while Washington (60 points) took home silver. Wisconsin (133 points), Penn State (134 points), and Minnesota (146 points) rounded out the top five.
Penelopea Gordon led the Maize and Blue throughout the race, clocking in 17th through the first three kilometers. Mary Caroline Heinen was the second runner a the 3K mark in 46th place, with Rylee Tolson just behind in 48th.
With the final kilometer left, Gordon dropped to 20th place while Heinen fell to 48th. Kayla Windemuller moved up five spots to 69th heading into the final kilometer, with Brooke Johnston moving up two spots to 71st and Jadyn Zdanavage up 10 spots to sit in 72nd.
Gordon was the first to cross the finish line, coming in 23rd with a personal-best time of 19:53.4. Heinen finished in 50th place (20:17.8), Windemuller finished 61st (20:26.3) and Zdanavage finished 68th (20:34.0). Heinen and Zdanavage also posted personal-best times.
Michigan will continue postseason competition on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Great Lakes Regional in Norton, Ohio.
