
Wolverines Fall in Four Sets to No. 9 Wisconsin

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to No. 9-ranked Wisconsin in four sets (25-21, 25-10, 25-20, 25-16) on Sunday night (Oct. 20) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (15-4, 5-3 Big Ten) was led by Allison Jacobs, who tallied 15 kills in the match with Ella Demetrician also reaching double-digits with 10. Maddi Cuchran had a team-leading 15 digs while Morgan Burke led the team with 37 assists.
The Wolverines started the first set on a 3-0 run with a block assist from Serena Nyambio and Jacobs as the match's second point. Wisconsin (13-4, 7-1 Big Ten) tied the match at five and took the lead at 6-5. The Wolverines tied the match at seven with a block from Burke and Boney and took the lead on a kill from Jacobs. With a kill from Boney and a block from her and Jacobs, U-M took a 10-8 lead which was all they needed as neither team was able to go on a run in the set with nor getting more than back-to-back points until the final three points. The Badgers brought the score to within one at 22-21, forcing a Michigan timeout. Boney put U-M back in front by two with a kill before Valentina Vaulet tallied back-to-back aces for the 25-21 set win.
After a kill from Jacobs to open the second set, Wisconsin took control. The Badgers took a 6-1 lead and kept their foot on the gas, extending their leads to 10-3 and 14-6, with the latter forcing the second U-M timeout of the set. UW ended the fourth set on an 11-4 run to win the second set 25-10.
Nyambio opened the third set with a kill, but the Badgers took the lead at 3-2 and kept it for the remainder of the set. At the media timeout, Wisconsin led 15-9, but Michigan was able to hang around out of the timeout and forced a Badgers timeout at 16-13 after a block from Vaulet and Boney. Wisconsin took their next timeout leading by two after kills from Boney and Jacobs cut into the lead. Another kill from Boney brought the Wolverines within one, but Wisconsin stayed in front. Michigan had two more chances to tie the set late at 20-19 after a block from Burke and Jacobs and 21-20 after a kill from Jacobs but could not convert. The Badgers ended the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-20.
The fourth set was an early battle with the teams splitting the first 22 points evenly. Michigan got out to an early 5-2 lead, but Wisconsin matched it and tied the match at five. After 11-11, Wisconsin went on a 4-2 run to lead 15-13 heading into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, UW controlled the set, ending on a 10-3 run to win the fourth set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
The Wolverines will start a run of three straight road matches on Friday (Oct. 25), facing off against Iowa at 6 p.m. CDT in Iowa City. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
