ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team will kick off its 2024-25 season on Friday (Oct. 4) at the Be Better; Invitational at 4 p.m. at the Holland Aquatic Center in Holland, Mich.
Notes
• Michigan will honor the late Ian Miskelley on Friday with the Be Better; Invitational, an annual meet that seeks to promote mental health awareness and the opportunity to donate to the Be Better; Foundation, a charitable organization established by the Miskelley family in Ian's memory.
• U-M will compete against Calvin, Hope and Purdue as all three schools have student-athletes with a connection to Miskelley and the Miskelley family at the prep, club and collegiate levels.
• This marks the official beginning of the second season for head coach Matt Bowe. Under Bowe's leadership in 2023-24, Michigan improved its standing at the NCAA Championships by six places and more than 50 points from the 2022-23 campaign.
• The Maize and Blue returns all nine of its All-Americans from last season's roster highlighted by the newly-minted B1G Swimmer to Watch Gal Groumi. Groumi is coming off an impressive junior season in which he captured two individual Big Ten championships and was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships.
• Returning for a fifth and final season is Bence Szabados. The sprint freestyle and butterfly specialist put together a strong senior campaign that included a league title in the 100-yard freestyle and three All-America second-team citations.
• Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Colin Geer will look to improve in his sophomore campaign after scoring 73 points at the Big Ten Championships. Geer also earned All-America second-team recognition for his swim in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA Championships in March.
• On the diving side, Cameron Gammage was named Big Ten Diver to Watch after a strong junior season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships in the three-meter dive.
• Friday's meet will feature a mix of traditional and non-traditional events and will be non-scoring.
