ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team (6-8, 1-2 Big Ten) heads to downtown Philadelphia to take on Penn State (7-7, 1-2 Big Ten) on Sunday (Jan. 7) at the famed Palestra. Tipoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Notes
• The Palestra, often referred to as the "Cathedral of College Basketball" and "the birthplace of college basketball," is a historic arena and the home gym of the Penn men's and women's basketball.
• Michigan and Penn State meet in the lone meeting in the regular season.
• This is the second game between Michigan and Penn State played at a historic arena. In 2016, U-M served as the home team for the inaugural Big Ten Super Saturday matchup at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In a doubleheader with U-M hockey, the Wolverines defeated the Nittany Lions 79-72 on the hardwood and followed with a 6-3 victory on the ice.
• In Big Ten play, Tarris Reed Jr. recorded his first career double-double against Minnesota (14 points, 11 rebounds) on Thursday (Jan. 4). He added a career-best five blocks against the Gophers and has nine of his team-leading 24 blocks in conference play. In early conference play, Reed scored a career-best 19 points in a win at Iowa (Dec. 10).
• In Big Ten play, Olivier Nkamhoua has three straight double-figure games. He is a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line and 4-for-7 from long range. Nkamhoua has had five straight games with seven-plus rebounds, including two of his four 10-plus board games. He leads U-M with 7.6 per game.
• In his last six games, Nkamhoua is 14-for-17 (82.3 percent) from the free throw line. He has boosted his season average to 71.7 percent. Over his last three games, he is 7-for-11 from long range (63.6 percent). Those seven buckets are nearly one-third of his season total (20).
• Dug McDaniel (5.1 apg) has five-plus assists in eight games, including his last three. He needs seven assists to crack 200 for his career.
• After scoring six points or fewer in a game, Nimari Burnett has a double-figure performance the next game. Most recently, after six points against McNeese (Dec. 29), he led U-M with 17 against Minnesota on Thursday (Jan. 4).
