Michigan Stumbles on Road Against No. 2 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell behind early and was unable to fight its way back into the game as No 2-ranked Purdue defeated the Wolverines 99-67 on Tuesday night (Jan. 23) at Mackey Arena on Tuesday (Jan. 23).
Leaders and Best
Jaelyn Llewellyn led Michigan with 16 points, while Terrance Williams II scored 10 points and pulled in eight rebounds and George Washington III scored a career high 10 points.
First Half
Michigan (7-12, 2-6 Big Ten) made just two of its first seven shots to start the game and trailed Purdue (18-2, 7-2 Big Ten) 13-4 with 15:49 to go in the first. Jace Howard scored his first points of the season off a three-pointer with 13:14 left to pull U-M within eight points, 15-7, but the Boilermakers responded 19 seconds later (12:55) with its fourth three-pointer of the half to extend its lead to 11 points (21-10).
After the Howard three-pointer, Michigan missed its next eight field-goal attempts and Purdue went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 24-10 with 10:47 left. Shortly after, the Boilermakers missed their next eight attempts. At the under-eight minute media timeout, Purdue was in the midst of a three-minute scoring drought -- but U-M had not scored for 5:27.
Llewellyn sparked a 6-0 burst with a pair of three-pointers to get the cut the deficit to 11 at 30-19 with five minutes remaining. U-M got to within 10 (31-21), but Purdue pulled away behind seven straight field goals late in the half as part of a 15-2 run over the final three minutes to take a 46-23 lead heading into halftime.
Second Half
Williams converted on a pair of three-point plays over the first 4:25 of the second half but U-M trailed, 56-35, at the first media timeout with 15:35 remaining. When play resumed, Purdue converted on five of its next seven field goals to extend its lead to 29, 77-48. Michigan made four straight field goals with two from Nkamhoua and one each from Burnett and Howard as Michigan cut the Purdue advantage to 70-48 with 11:40 remaining.
Michigan missed its next six shots, and coupled with a 9-0 Boilermakers run, trailed 79-48 with nine minutes left to play. U-M struggled from the field late in the half and trailed 89-54 with 3:48 left. Washington scored eight points over the final three minutes, including a pair of three-pointers, but it was not enough.

Michigan will return to Crisler Center for its next contest, Saturday (Jan. 27) at 5 p.m. against Iowa. The game will be broadcast live on FS1.
