
Second-Half Shooting Slump Costs Michigan in Home Loss to Iowa

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to Iowa 88-78 on Saturday (Jan. 27) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Terrance Williams II scored a team-high 16 points and Dug McDaniel, Nimari Burnett and Olivier Nkamhoua each had 13 points on the night. McDaniel and Burnett had five assists, while Nkamhoua pulled in six rebounds.
Second Half
Michigan (7-13, 2-7 Big Ten) called an early timeout at the 17:43 mark after Iowa (12-8, 4-5 Big Ten) opened the second half making three straight field goals and went on an 8-0 run to take a 50-44 lead. After falling behind by eight points at the 16:46 mark, back-to-back Michigan three pointers from Jace Howard and Will Tschetter brought U-M within two points (60-58) with 12:27 remaining.
Iowa built a seven-point lead, but then Michigan went on a 6-0 run over 14 seconds and trailed 67-66. The run was highlighted by a Tschetter layup in transition off a McDaniel steal. After pulling within one point, Michigan missed nine straight field goals while its only points came from the charity stripe. Michigan did not make a field goal for more than six minutes during this span and Iowa grew its lead to 12, 83-71, with 3:42 remaining.
Michigan finished the game making three of its last 15 and made just one field goal over the final 10 minutes and fell 88-78.
First Half
U-M opened the contest connecting on three of its first four field goal attempts to go up 6-2, 2:16 into the first. Iowa responded with a 6-0 run and -- after Tarris Reed Jr. scored his sixth point of the game on a dunk -- the game was knotted up at 8 with 15:20 to play.
After two lead changes and a tie, Michigan made three straight field goals to pull ahead 21-18 with 10:17 left in the first. The third field goal came from Tray Jackson, who scored his first points since missing four games due to injury. Michigan and Iowa traded the lead three more times, but the Wolverines captured the lead once more with a shot from Nkamhoua that ignited a 10-0 run and gave U-M a 36-27 lead with 5:32 remaining.
In a first half that saw 10 lead changes, Michigan held a lead for the final five minutes. Iowa chipped away at the U-M advantage and made four straight field goals to close out the first 20 minutes as Michigan took a 44-42 lead into the locker room.
What's Next
Michigan will travel up the road to East Lansing, Mich., for a matchup against in-state rival Michigan State on Tuesday (Jan. 30) at Breslin Center. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Peacock.

• After having five assists, Burnett now has three games of five-plus assists on the season.
