DEXTER, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team opened the 2023 season hosting with a solid showing at the Michigan Open on Friday afternoon (Sept. 1) at Hudson Mills Metropark. The Wolverines competed against Detroit-Mercy and finished with seven of the top 10 racers.
The pair of Tom Brady and Nick Foster stuck together and paced the field with Brady finishing first just in front of Foster with times of 14:58.8 and 14:59.0, respectively. Both marks are the fastest ever at the Michigan Open, beating professional Craig Huffer's time of 15.01.4 set in 2019.
The next Wolverine to cross the line was sophomore Ian Hill, who ran at a 3:03 K pace to post a time of 15:13.9, good for sixth overall. Friday's race marked Hill's Michigan cross country debut.
Anthony Hancock and Colton Yesney rounded out the top-five finishers for the Michigan men. Hancock secured seventh overall with a time of 15:15.2, and Yesney crossed the line at 15:18.2, earning eighth place.
All the Wolverines running for the team or unattached clocked times below 16:18.0.
Michigan will race again on Sept. 23 when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Invitational.
