U-M Battles Top-Ranked Texas at Lady Bird Lake

Austin, Texas -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan rowing program finished a day of competitive racing in a head-to-head regatta with No. 1 Texas on Saturday (April 15). Competing with mostly championship boats (1V8, 2V8, 1V4, 2V4), the Maize and Blue showed speed and looked competitive against the top-ranked team in the nation.

Competing at Texas' Lady Bird Lake on the Colorado River, boats raced in cloudy weather with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s.

The 1V8 race was the final event of the morning. U-M was moving with the Longhorns early, coming across the 1,000-meter mark 2.2 seconds behind Texas. U-T put up a similar split over the second half of the race to cross at 6:10.738, with U-M coming in at 6:21.922.

The 2V8 event was extremely close across the first half of the race. U-M was at 3:12.5 as the boats crossed the halfway point, 1.7 seconds behind Texas. U-T was faster over the latter 1,000 meters and finished 7.3726 seconds ahead of the Wolverines.

The Wolverine 2V4 raced first, followed by the 1V4. The first varsity four trailed by five seconds at the 1,000-meter mark but fell back to a 15-second difference at the finish line with Texas crossing in 7:09.706.

The Wolverines will have a weekend away from competition before returning to Belleville Lake for Senior Day against Louisville at the end of the month (April 30).
