HENDERSON, Nev. -- Led by a fourth top-20 finish of the season by sophomore Hunter Thomson, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a 299 final-round total on Wednesday (March 1) to finish with an 886 54-hole total and finish 11th at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate played at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
With the first of two events during the Wolverines' spring break, U-M came out of the gates strong posting an opening 279 (-9) in Monday's first round as junior Will Anderson used six birdies and an eagle to tie the second-lowest round at U-M with a 64 (-8). Three Wolverine starters closed with sub-par tallies -- Thomson (71 (-1) and sophomore Yuqi Liu 71 (-1) -- to help put the Wolverines in a tie for second.
Despite an even 72 from Thomson in Tuesday's second round, the Wolverines were unable to keep their momentum from the first day and posted a 308 tally to fall seven spots into a tie for ninth after 36 holes with a 587 total. With an even-par 72 from redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland and a closing 74 from Thomson, the Maize and Blue was able to bounce back from a slow start to the final round.
Putting together a 217 (+1) tally, Thomson led the Wolverines. After a red-hot start, Anderson closed with a 220 (64-79-77) to tie for 35th, while Hoagland rounded out the top three with his 225 (73-80-72) and a tie for 48th.
Redshirt-sophomore Jack O'Donnell closed as the top U-M individual with a career-low 224 total and tie for 44th. After a career-low 70 (-2) in the first round, he went on to top his prior U-M best by 11 shots (235, at 2021 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate). Junior Jude Kim tied for 55th with his 228 (71-80-77).
The Wolverines will waste no time getting back to action as they host their annual event, the Desert Mountain Collegiate, on Saturday and Sunday (March 4-5) at the Desert Mountain Resort's Outlaw Course. U-M looks to defend its team title from a season ago.
