
Wolverines Sixth Before Play Suspended on Day One at Desert Mountain Collegiate

» Michigan opened the Desert Mountain Collegiate with a 293 and was sixth after 18 holes; however, before play was suspended due to darkness, the Wolverines had moved up two spots.
» With six birdies and an eagle, Ben Hoagland held the first round lead with a 68 (-4).

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With the second round suspended due to darkness, the University of Michigan men's golf team used a 293 first round tally today (Saturday, March 4) and is sixth in the 16-team field at the Desert Mountain Collegiate at the Outlaw Course.
The Wolverines returned to Scottsdale to host the eighth annual Desert Mountain event and close their spring break trip. With the Maize and Blue using 16 birdies and an eagle, the Wolverines posted an opening 293 to position themselves sixth after 18 holes. With three Wolverines having 2-3 holes remaining in the second round, U-M moved up two spots to fourth when play was called.
Leading U-M with six birdies and an eagle in the first round, redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland put himself atop the leaderboard with a 68 (-4). His tally matched the 68 fired by Mississippi State's Ruan Pretorius. Returning to the starting lineup, junior Jude Kim used four birdies to open with a 73 (+1).
Sophomores Hunter Thomson and Yuqi Liu each opened with 76s which put them in a tie for 54th, while junior Will Anderson rounded out the starting five with an opening 81. For a second straight event, redshirt-junior Jack O'Donnell led U-M's four individuals as he carded a 75 (+3), putting him in a tie for 43rd.
Michigan and the other 15 teams will return Sunday morning to finish the second round before immediately continuing into the final round. The field will remain in the same pairings from Saturday.
