Michigan Drops Double-Overtime Contest vs. Florida at Jumpman Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After 16 lead changes and 15 ties, the University of Michigan men's basketball team fell short of Florida, 106-101 in double overtime on Tuesday night (Dec. 19) in the Jumpman Invitational at the Spectrum Center.
Leaders and Best
Dug McDaniel led the way with a career-best tying 33 points. Olivier Nkamhoua added his fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Terrance Williams II reached double figures for the 10th time this season with a season-best tying 17 points.
The Turning Point
Florida (8-3) held Michigan (6-6) scoreless for more than three minutes during the second overtime while going on a 12-0 run to take a 102-93 lead. The Wolverines pulled within four in the final minute but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Second Overtime
After a pair of Nkamhoua free throws gave U-M a 93-91 lead, Florida went on a 12-0 run to take a nine-point lead, 102-93. Despite two threes in the final minute from Nkamhoua and Williams to pull within four, the Wolverines were unable to complete the comeback.
First Overtime
Despite not making a field goal throughout the entire first overtime period, the Wolverines took a three-point lead in the final minute behind eight free throws -- six of which came from McDaniel. However, Florida drilled a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 89. Nimari Burnett's last-second attempt was off the mark, sending the game into double OT.
Second Half
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half before the Wolverines made four straight field goals to spur an 11-2 run and build a 55-46 lead with 4:54 gone in the half. Florida responded by making its next four field-goal attempts to pull within three, 59-56.
After a jumper from McDaniel and a pair of free throws by Tarris Reed Jr., the Gators went on a 12-2 run to take a 68-65 lead with 7:19 left. The Wolverines tied the game at the free-throw line before a triple from Nkamhoua ended a U-M field goal drought of more than four minutes, giving the Maize and Blue a 72-69 lead with 5:26 remaining.
UF held Michigan to just one of its next five field goals to take a four-point lead, 78-74, with 1:36 on the clock. When Reed made an and-one layup to pull within one, Florida answered with a three-point play of its own with less than a minute to play in regulation. Burnett sank a jumper with just over 30 seconds remaining, and after Burnett and Nkamhoua forced a jump-ball turnover, Nkamhoua added a putback jam with 12 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime tied at 81.
First Half
The Wolverines made six of their first nine field goals -- including a trio of three-pointers by McDaniel -- to claim an eight-point lead in the first six minutes of play. Florida answered by outscoring Michigan 12-5 over the next five minutes, but Michigan held a 20-19 lead.
After the teams traded three-pointers, the Maize and Blue scored five unanswered points behind a McDaniel layup and a three-pointer from Jaelin Llewellyn to take a 28-22 lead with 6:09 before the break. Florida outscored U-M 13-9 the rest of the half before a half-court heave was good to give the Gators a 38-37 advantage at halftime.
What's Next
Michigan will return to Crisler Center on Friday, Dec. 29 when it wraps up its non-conference slate hosting McNeese on Friday, Dec. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Michigan is 0-2 in the Jumpman Invitational. In the inaugural event against North Carolina, the Wolverines fell 80-76.
• Michigan has had at least three players score in double figures in all 12 games.
• McDaniel scored 33 points to record his team-leading sixth 20-plus point game and has scored in double figures in all 12 games. He scored 11 of U-M's first 13 first-half points and finished the first 20 minutes with 15.
• Nkamhoua has 11 games with both double-digit scoring and five-plus rebounds. With 11 rebounds Tuesday, he now has seven-plus in eight games. He has 30 over his last three games (10.0 rpg)
• Williams has hit a three-pointer in eight straight games. He has made nine over his last three games. He has nine games with multiple three-pointers.
• Reed has scored in double figures in his last three games -- a career-best 19 at Iowa (Dec. 10), 13 against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 16) and 14 vs. the Gators.
• After starting the season 9-for-25 from the free-throw line (nine games), Reed has gone 12-for-17 over his last three games
