ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Tom Brady of the University of Michigan men's cross country team was named the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon (Nov. 27).
The honor marks the second individual postseason award for the graduate student after being named Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association last Tuesday (Nov. 21).
Brady earned an individual award in every postseason race in 2023, garnering All-Big Ten first-team and All-Region recognition in back-to-back races at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis. The Park Ridge, Ill., native capped off his dominant season with a top-40 finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn All-America honors.
Brady led the Wolverines in all six races that he started this season and was instrumental in propelling Michigan to its fourth consecutive NCAA Championships appearance by finishing third overall at the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Behind Brady's All-America performance in Charlottesville, Va., the Maize and Blue was able to improve its finish by 10 places from 2022, securing 19th overall as a team against the best programs in the country. Brady posted the fastest time among runners from the Great Lakes region at 29:37.1.
Brady is the sixth member of the program to win Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year and first Wolverine to win the award since Devin Meyrer in the shortened 2020 season.
