ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team will return to action at the Battle 4 Atlantis against Stanford on Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) in a consolation bracket's second game of the night. Notes
• Juwan Howard returned to U-M's bench vs. Memphis (Nov. 22) at the Battle 4 Atlantis. Despite his return, associate head coach Phil Martelli still served as the interim head coach. Howard underwent a successful heart procedure (Sept. 15) at the University of Michigan Health Samuel and Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
• Michigan is making its third appearance in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Wolverines have a 5-2 record in their two previous visits after an opening loss at the 2015 event (No. 18 UConn, 74-60), Michigan won five straight games, including the 2019 championship. The streak was snapped with an opening 71-67 loss to Memphis in 2023.
• After trailing by 12 after the first half (37-25), Michigan battled to within a single point in the second half vs. Memphis in the Wolverines opening game at the Battle 4 Atlantis. However, the comeback came up just shy, as the Tigers used late free throws to seal a 71-67 win. In the second half, Michigan pulled within one point with just over four minutes remaining, but a Tigers' three-pointer from Jaykwon Walton put them up four where they stayed for the remainder of the game.
• With the loss to Memphis, U-M heads to the consolation bracket of the Battle 4 Atlantis and faces Stanford. If the Wolverines win, they will face the winner of the Northern Iowa/Texas Tech game in the 5th/6th place game on Friday (Nov. 24). With a loss, the Maize and Blue fall to the 7th/8th place game.
• Michigan trails in the all-time series with Stanford, 2-3. Starting the series, the two squads met every other year in the late 40s and early 50s; as the Wolverines went 1-2 -- U-M won 45-37 (Dec. 19, 1946) in Ann Arbor before losing 53-51 (Dec. 20, 1948) in Palo Alto dropping a 77-66 (Dec. 22, 1950) back in Ann Arbor. Nine years later, U-M lost a third straight match-up, 59-52, in the 1959 Pacific Coast Tournament (Dec. 29). It only took 54 years before the Wolverines and Cardinal would meet again as U-M held on for a 68-65 win at the 2013 Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival (Dec. 21).           Â
