ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Iowa on Thursday (Oct. 19) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
A set-piece goal from sophomore Kali Burrell in the 42nd minute knotted the match and brought the tally to its final resting place. A win over Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday (Oct. 22), or a draw coupled with a Michigan St. and Rutgers win or a Michigan St. win and Rutgers tie would secure Michigan's place in the Big Ten Tournament.
Within the first 18 minutes of the game, Iowa (9-3-3, 3-3-2 Big Ten) had three shots, but none on goal.
Michigan (7-5-3, 3-4-1 Big Ten) registered its first opportunity of the match in the 22nd minute. Senior Sarah Bridenstine sent in a service off a corner that was headed by freshman Gabrielle Prych at the top of the six that went over the bar.
Four minutes later, Iowa got on the board with the first goal of the match as Josie Durr intercepted a ball in the Wolverines' defensive third. Her run down the right side of the pitch resulted in a sliding effort inside the box with her right foot that found the lower portion of the net.
U-M cashed in on a set-piece to level the match in the 42nd minute. Following an Iowa handball 24 yards out, junior Kali Burrell bent a shot around the Hawkeye wall and finished lower-right, leveling things at 1.
Michigan earned a corner kick in the 23rd minute and Bridenstine's service into the box found Prych, whose header went high.
Iowa took the lead in the 26th minute with a goal by Durr. The Hawkeyes maintained the pressure on offense and had another chance on goal, forcing Michigan senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski to make her first save of the game in the 27th minute.
Towards the end of the first half, Michigan gained momentum on offense, connecting a series of passes deep in Iowa's end, but was unable to get any shots on goal.
In the 42nd minute, Michigan was awarded a free kick right outside the box following an Iowa handball. Burrell took the kick, beating the wall and finding the bottom-right corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Michigan had another chance off a corner, but the header from senior Sammi Woods went wide of the goal in the 44th minute.
Iowa had a chance off a free kick in the 66th minute, but the shot was deflected by a Michigan defender and went wide for a corner. Iowa had another chance off the corner kick and Sparkowski came up with the crucial save to keep the game tied.
Another chance for the Wolverines came in the 75th minute when Bridenstine's shot from the right side of the box went high over the goal.
In the closing minute of the game, sophomore Jenna Lang took a chance with a long-distance shot that sailed wide of the net.
