
Wolverines Fall Short of Scarlet Knights on the Road

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell to Rutgers by a 2-0 count on Thursday night (Oct. 12) at the Scarlet Knights' Yurcak Field.
Michigan senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski came up big in the opening minutes of the match, as RU's Gia Girman had an open shot top-center at the six that was turned away at the 2:18 mark.
Following a disallowed Rutgers (7-5-3, 3-3-1 Big Ten) goal due to an offsides whistle in the 13th minute, U-M tallied its first shot of the match on a header from sophomore Aniyah League on a corner from senior Sarah Bridenstine. League's bounding effort was pushed wide left.
Sparkowski ended the opening half with three stops. U-M chances came off of a trio of corners.
Senior Kacey Lawrence was responsible for two early chances in the second half. The first came off a corner in the 47th minute, followed by another shot from distance in the 52nd minute.
RU had its best chance of the match in the 57th, as Ashely Baran had a chance in close that was smothered out by Sparkowski near post.
The Wolverines (7-4-3, 3-3-1 Big Ten) answered back with a golden chance in the 61st minute, as an open header from junior Avery Peters on the back post sailed high.
The Scarlet Knights then rattled off two goals in 53 seconds, beginning with a marker from Kylie Daigle at 68:56, followed by a penalty-kick goal from Riley Tiernan at 69:49 from the penalty spot to make the score 2-0.
Chasing two goals, sophomore Kali Burrell nearly cut the lead in half in the 76th minute. She then played a ball from the top-left portion of the six with her right foot that rang off the right post. Sophomore Abby Zugay appeared to be taken down in the box on the ensuing rebound, but the penalty was overturned via video review in the final notable chance of the night for the Wolverines.
Overall, RU outshot U-M 16-15 on the match, with U-M holding a 13-7 advantage in the category in the second half of play. The Wolverines had a season-high eight corners in the match, and Sparkowski accumulated four saves on the night.
