ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate student Jack Medley and senior/junior Cameron Amine earned top-five wins at 125 and 165 pounds, respectively, as the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rolled to a dominant 27-6 dual win over No. 14 Wisconsin in its return home Sunday evening (Jan. 15) in front of 1,435 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines claimed eight of 10 matches to stay unbeaten (7-0) on the season.
Medley set the tone in the first match, using a big third period to beat fifth-ranked Eric Barnett 12-6 at 125 pounds. Medley, currently unranked, trailed by one entering the final frame when he reversed Barnett to his back for six points early and tacked on two takedowns down the stretch to earn his fourth straight dual win.
Junior/sophomore Dylan Ragusin, ranked fifth at 133 pounds, earned bonus points with a 12-1 major decision over 27th-ranked Taylor LaMont. Ragusin scored three takedowns, including two in the third period, added a four-point tilt in the first and rode out the second to accumulate 3:45 in riding-time advantage.
Fifth-year senior Cole Mattin also earned a ranked win with a 6-2 decision over No. 24 Joseph Zargo at 141 pounds. Mattin, ranked 23rd nationally, could not finish several shots in the first period before breaking through in the second with a stall point on the edge and an immediate reattack takedown off the restart. He iced it with a single leg and rideout in the final 30 seconds of the third.
Wisconsin picked up its first win at 149 pounds, where sophomore/freshman Chance Lamer, ranked 20th, fell to second-ranked Austin Gomez 17-10 but used a late takedown off a duck under to a bodylock and rode out the match to hold Gomez to a regular decision. It was Lamer's first dual loss of the season.
Fifth-year senior Will Lewan, ranked eighth at 157 pounds, scored two takedowns in the first period on an early single leg and subsequent double to defeat 17th-ranked Garrett Model 5-3 and bounce back from his first dual loss.
Amine, ranked sixth, claimed the dual's marquee match after the intermission break, using a late takedown to edge No. 5 Dean Hamiti 5-3 at 165 pounds. Amine struck first with a reattack takedown late in the first, but Hamiti responded in kind late in the second, and a Wisconsin escape knotted the score early in the third. Hamiti initiated a scramble off a low single shot in the final 15 seconds, and Amine spun behind to score the winning takedown with just seven seconds remaining. Amine is a perfect 4-0 in duals since returning to the lineup from injury.
Fifth-year senior Max Maylor picked up his third straight dual win with a 4-1 decision over James Rowley at 174 pounds. Maylor scored on a first-period takedown and rode out the third to finish with 2:59 in time advantage.
Graduate student Matt Finesilver clinched the Wolverine dual win with a 19-2 technical fall over Tyler Dow at 184 pounds. Finesilver, ranked ninth, scored a first-period single leg and transitioned it to a four-point leg turk before adding three more four-point turks in the second -- earning 16 total back -- and ending the bout at the 4:51 mark. He is 7-0 in duals this season.
Wisconsin added another decision win at 197 pounds before fifth-year senior Mason Parris, ranked second nationally, closed out the dual with a 4-0 decision over 11th-ranked Trent Hillger at heavyweight.
