STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team won at the bookends, including a Mason Parris decision over top-ranked heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet, but fell to No. 1 Penn State, 30-8, on Friday night (Jan. 20) at the Nittany Lions' Bryce Jordan Center. It was the Wolverines' first dual loss of the season.
Parris, ranked second at heavyweight, avenged three last-season losses to Kerkvliet with a 3-1 decision in the first meeting between the two the year. Tied with an escape and stall warning apiece midway through the third period, Parris spun behind a double-leg half shot to collect the go-ahead takedown and rode out the match to stay unbeaten on the season. He improved 18-0 with his seventh-ranked win -- and third top-10 win -- this season.
Michigan also earned bonus points with Jack Medley's 19-3 technical fall over Gary Steen in the dual's opening bout at 125 pounds. Medley, who debuted at No. 22 in this week's national rankings, scored on five takedowns -- three in the first period -- and eight back points to end the bout at 5:38. He has won each of his last five dual matches this semester.
Penn State claimed eight straight matches in the middle to pull away, including back-to-back overtime decisions at 157 and 165 pounds.
Will Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, appeared inches away from finishing on a sudden-victory single-leg shot and an extended ensuing scramble against 17th-ranked Levi Haines before allowing a reattack single for the deciding takedown moments later in a 3-1 defeat.
Cameron Amine, ranked fifth at 165 pounds, suffered his first dual loss of the season to 16th-ranked Alex Facundo, 5-5 on 14 seconds of riding time in the tiebreaker. Amine trailed late in regulation after a first-period PSU takedown but scored on a rear-standing takedown from a late flurry -- on a coaches' challenge from the Michigan corner. Action restarted with 20 seconds left and Facundo escaped to force overtime.
Michigan also dropped decisions at 133 and 141 pounds. Dylan Ragusin, ranked 12th nationally at the former weight class, scored the first takedown against top-ranked Roman Bravo Young with a counter takedown on the edge in the last 10 seconds in the first period but fell, 4-2, as the Nittany Lion -- the two-time defending NCAA champion -- earned a takedown of his own in the second and rode out the third. Cole Mattin, ranked 23rd at 141 pounds, dropped a 7-2 decision to fourth-ranked Beau Bartlett on takedowns and riding-time advantage.
Michigan (7-1, 2-1 Big Ten) will close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest at No. 25 Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 22) at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, N.J. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+.
