BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The first action of the 2023 calendar year saw the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team fall to No. 12-ranked Indiana by a 208.5-91.5 score on Saturday (Jan. 14) inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
The quartet of Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Natalie Kan and Lindsay Flynn got the Wolverines started with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.54. Kathryn Ackerman was the top finisher for the Maize and Blue in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing fourth with a time of 10:08.42.
Sophia Kudryashova was the top finisher for Michigan in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing fourth with a time of 1:50.23. Chung swam her way to a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and Sim finished second in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:00.71.
Katie Crom swam a blistering 2:00.65 to finish first in the 200-yard butterfly, winning by over a full second. Flynn and Brady Kendall touched the wall second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle.
Claire Newman swam a 51.39 and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle and Mariella Venter was the top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 2:00.50. Sim then picked up her second second-place finish on the day in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Crom finished second in the 500-yard freestyle.
Kendall out-touched Indiana's top finisher by .17 seconds as she touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.39, while Kan finished third with a time of 55.53. In the 200-yard IM, Sim swam her way to a second-place finish with a time of 2:00.74.
In the final event of the day, Newman, Megan Glass, Kendall and Christey Liang picked up a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:23.07.
On the diving side, Lucy Hogan finished second with a score of 322.80 on the 3-meter springboard and posted a second-place finish in the 1-meter competition.
The Wolverines will return to the pool Saturday (Jan. 21) at 11 a.m. against Ohio State in Canham Natatorium.
