ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked and No. 5-seeded University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a 4-0 sweep of Western Michigan on Friday (May 6) to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines will face Oklahoma, which defeated Louisville 4-2 in the earlier match, on Saturday (May 7) at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead off the doubles point, winning it for the 22nd time this season. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty got back on track with a 6-0 win over Fynn Lohse and Joaquin Caballer. The duo had a 13-match win streak halted last Sunday in Michigan's win over Ohio State. The U-M pair is now 16-2 in dual play and 17-3 on the season. The No. 24-ranked team of Nino Ehrenschneider and Andrew Fenty followed with a 6-2 win. They took a 3-0 edge and led 4-2 before nailing the final two games for the victory. It marked their 10th dual win as they improve to 18-5 overall. Ondrej Styler and Jacob Bickersteth led 5-4 at No. 3 doubles before the match was abandoned.
Fenty, ranked No. 63 in singles, made quick work of Lohse at No. 3. He did not lose a game in a 6-0 first-set win and took a 6-3 second set to push Michigan ahead 2-0.
On the next court, No. 27 Styler put away Peter Kuszynski with matching 6-3 sets. It was sweet revenge as Kuszynski took the only WMU point against Michigan during their regular-season matchup. Styler is now 13-1 at No. 1 singles to extend his win streak to six matches and improve to 22-4.
No. 88-ranked Maloney clinched the match victory at No. 2 over Anton Arzhankin 6-3, 6-2. It marked his 23rd singles win of the season and 15th in dual matches.
Michigan led on the other three courts before they were abandoned, as the Wolverines won all six first sets.
