ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the announcement Thursday (May 19) of the qualifiers to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, the University of Michigan men's track and field team will start the national postseason with a deep lineup that will feature 15 entries.
Led by the record-smashing Joshua Zeller (110-meter hurdles) and multiple-time All-American Tom Dodd (1,500 meters), Michigan will challenge for individual NCAA Championships berths in 10 of the 20 events to be contested next Wednesday through Saturday (May 25-28) hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
The four-day competition, which features 48 qualifiers in each individual event and 24 teams in each relay, will serve as the opening rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore. The top-12 finishers in each event from the East Region -- in which Michigan competes -- and the top 12 from the West Region will comprise the 24-person fields at Oregon.
Zeller will look to build off his historic Big Ten title-winning run last weekend, entering the East Prelims as the No. 2 seed in his signature event. He will be joined in the hurdles by teammate No. 34 Job Mayhue, and leads a sprints corps that also includes two-time Big Ten silver medalist No. 24 Dubem Amene (400 meters) and the No. 19 4x400 relay.
Dodd will look to qualify for his fourth career NCAA Championships meet as the No. 10 seed at 1,500 meters, an event in which teammate Nick Foster is ranked No. 15. The 1,500 meters is one of three events in which Michigan will send multiple distance runners. All-American No. 13 Christian Hubaker will be joined in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by No. 30 Joost Plaetinck and No. 39 Austin Remick, and the multiple-time medal-winning duo of No. 15 Miles Brown and No. 18 Cole Johnson advanced to contest the 800 meters.
Also qualifying in the distance events was No. 42 Tom Brady at 10,000 meters.
Bronze medalist high jumper Cassidy Henshaw leads the way in the field events with his No. 13 seed. He is joined in the jumping events by No. 29 Bera Ajala (triple jump) and No. 42 Henry Sheldon (pole vault).
This will mark the third straight edition of the East Prelims in which Mayhue and Plaetinck will compete in their respective events, and the second in a row for Amene, Dodd, Foster, Brady, Zeller, Hubaker, Remick and Sheldon.
