STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 clean sweep of Penn State on Sunday (April 17) in State College, rebounding from a 4-1 loss at No. 2 OSU on Saturday that snapped a 13-match win streak.
The Wolverines got right back on track by quickly capturing the doubles point for the 17th time this season. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty won their 11th consecutive doubles match in a 6-0 victory. The pair is now now 6-0 when playing at No. 2, 5-0 in Big Ten play and 14-2 overall. Moments later the doubles point was secured as No. 23 Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider improved to 7-3 at No. 1 doubles and 16-5 on the season with a 6-2 win over Malik Bhatnager and Charl Morgan.
Michigan won No. 1, 2 and 3 singles quickly to secure the match victory. No. 25 Ondrej Styler took down Miko Eala 6-1, 6-4 to improve to 8-1 at No. 1 singles for the Wolverines and earn his 17th singles win of the year. No. 83 Gavin Young quickly followed with matching 6-3 wins over Sam Bossem at No. 3 for his team-leading 24th singles victory of the year. Maloney clinched the team win at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bora Sengul. Down 4-1 in the second set, Maloney went on a 6-0 run to keep his win streak intact at 10 in a row and solidify his first 20-win season.
No. 46 Jacob Bickersteth topped Loren Byers in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 at No. 4 singles, marking his 19th win of the season. No. 104 Ehrenschneider remained unbeaten in Big Ten singles play this season with his fifth victory, defeating Morgan at No. 5 singles, 6-2 and 7-6 (2).
Patorn Hanchaikul closed out the match with his first collegiate dual singles win. He topped Chikaya Soto 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Michigan will honor its seniors in the final home match of the season on Saturday (April 23) at noon against Michigan State. Michigan's Wheelchair Tennis team will also be recognized and play against the Spartans in doubles.
