• No. 22 Michigan fell to Maryland, 5-1, in the road series opener.
• Michigan outhit the Terrapins 9-6 but left 10 runners stranded; Hannah Carson and Taylor Bump posted two hits apiece.
• Alex Storako struck out eight and allowed five runs -- three earned -- on six hits, no walks and an error through 4.2 innings.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan softball team outhit Maryland but could not push across enough runs in a 5-1 loss in the series opener against the Terrapins Thursday evening (April 14) at Maryland Softball Stadium.

Maryland used a two-out, two-run homer to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning and cushioned it with a three-run fifth behind three straight singles with two outs.

The Wolverines put runners on base in all but the last inning and cut the lead to one with a two-out rally of their own in the third. Senior catcher Hannah Carson doubled to right and scored when fifth-year senior third baseman Taylor Bump sent an RBI single to left. Carson and Bump highlighted the Michigan offense with two hits apiece, and seven different Wolverines registered a hit.

Michigan stranded 10 baserunners, including four in scoring position, and were stymied by several strong defensive efforts, including a nice catch in deep left-center that ended a Wolverine threat in the second.

Senior RHP Alex Storako (17-6) was strong through four frames but could not halt the Terps' rally with two outs in the fifth. She finished with eight strikeouts and allowed five runs -- three earned -- on six hits, no walks and an error through 4.2 innings pitched.

Michigan (24-13, 4-6 Big Ten) will resume the three-game road series against Maryland at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, April 15) at Maryland Softball Stadium.
