WEST POINT, Miss.-- Using a final round 68 (-4), freshman Hunter Thomson moved up nine spots to finish seventh (211, -5) individually helping the University of Michigan men's golf team tally an 879 total today (Tuesday, April 12) and tie for 12th at the Mossy Oak Collegiate played at the Mossy Oak Golf Course.
Using four birdies and posting a team-best ninth sub-par tally (70, -2) in the first round, Thomson paced the Maize and Blue in the opening 18 holes, tying him for 12th overall. After the day's second round was called due to darkness, he returned this morning adding another four birdies to card a 73 (+1), but dropped to the 16th position.
Heading straight into the final round, Thomson made it three straight rounds with four birdies, while adding an eagle on the par-5 17th hole, to close with a 68 (-4) -- his team-leading 10th sub-par round and third sub-70. With his fifth sub-par 54-hole total (211, -5), Thomson vaulted nine spots to end seventh and record his third top 10 finish of his rookie campaign.
Led by Thomson's performance, the Wolverines used team totals of 295, 289 and 295 to tie for 12th with an 879 total. Freshman Yuqi Liu highlighted U-M's second 18 with a career-low 70 (-2) after four birdies and 12 pars, while fellow freshman Bavake Sihota posted a 71 (-1) -- his second sub-par round of the season. Sihota's 222 (76-71-75) tied for 59th, while graduate Brendan O'Reilly tied for 69th at 224 (74-75-75).
The Wolverines close their regular season by heading to Columbus, Ohio, Saturday and Sunday (April 23-24) for the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the prestigious Scarlet Course.
