ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6 ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over Indiana on Sunday (April 10), marking the team's 13th consecutive victory. At 6-0 in the Big Ten, the Wolverines control their destiny with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Michigan (16-2) won the doubles point for the 12th consecutive match and has taken the point in 16 of 18 matches. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty stayed hot, capturing the pairs' 10th straight doubles match, playing at No. 2 versus Patrick Fletchall and Ilya Tirapolsky. After being tied 3-3, they rattled off three straight points for the 6-3 win. They are now 13-2 on the season and 4-0 in the B1G.
Ondrej Styler and Nino Ehrenschneider paired up at No. 1, their first time playing a dual in doubles, and won 6-3 over Carson Haskins and Vikash Singh. After going down 2-0, they won three straight to take the lead 3-2. After the Hoosiers tied things up, they won another three straight points to put them away. Will Cooksey and Gavin Young trailed 4-5 at No. 3 before the match was called.
Ehrenschneider picked up his second singles win of the weekend and fifth straight at No. 5 singles to push Michigan ahead 2-0. Ranked No. 102, Ehrenschneider was tied with Tirapolsky 1-1 in the first and then won five straight for the 6-1 set. Knotted at 2-2 in the second, Ehrenschenider won the next four including an ace for the final 6-2 win.
Moments later on the next court., No. 25 Ondrej Styler dispatched Patrick Fletchall at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1 and 6-4. Styler has won his last nine matches and is 11-2 this spring. He gave up just one point in the first set. The two exchanged games in the second with Styler taking the last two for the 6-4 win.
Maloney, ranked No. 109, clinched the team win at No. 2 singles, taking down Luka Vukovic with matching 6-3 sets. He has now won nine straight singles matches as he improves to 11-1 in dual play and 3-0 in the B1G.
No. 58 Jacob Bickersteth rebounded with a win at No. 4 singles over Michael Andre. He fell behind 4-1 in the first set before rallying for the 6-4 win. He never trailed in the second, taking it 6-2, and he is now 11-2 in dual singles.
Young, ranked No. 111, pushed Michigan's score to 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vikash Singh at No. 3 singles. It marked his eighth straight singles win and he is now 12-2 in dual play and 5-0 in the B1G.
Alexander Zederbauer played his first dual singles match at No. 6, but it was Jagger Saylor coming out with the lone win for the Hoosiers, 6-4, 6-4.
Michigan hits the road for the final away weekend of the regular season, visiting Ohio State on Friday (April 15) and Penn State on Sunday (April 17) at noon. The last home match is slated for Saturday (April 23) vs. Michigan State.
