Michigan Wins Ninth Straight, Sweeps Wisconsin

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team continued its winning ways with its ninth straight victory, a 7-0 win over Nebraska on Sunday afternoon (March 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win was also the Maize and Blue's sixth straight sweep over its opponents.
U-M earned its eighth straight doubles point and 11th of the season to start the match with a 1-0 advantage. The No. 6-ranked duo of Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider breezed through the top spot, winning 6-0 and earning their team-leading 14th doubles victories of the campaign. The doubles point was clinched after Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young rattled off two games straight after a Wisconsin break to win 6-3.
Young eased his way through singles, winning at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to earn his team-leading 20th win of the season. After battling it out game-for-game in his first set, Ehrenschneider closed out his match at No. 5, winning 7-5, 6-2.
The Wolverines clinched the match when No. 122-ranked Patrick Maloney won at No. 3 in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Wisconsin's Robin Parts would not go down without a fight in the second set, battling to a 5-5 tie before Maloney clinched the game and the match with two straight wins. The win was Maloney's seventh straight and 17th on the season.
The remaining matches were finished out, with Michigan clinching the sweep with victories on the rest of the courts. No. 33-ranked Fenty battled in his first set at No. 2, breaking serve at 5-5 and then taking the tiebreaker 7-3 before winning set two, 6-2.
No. 27-ranked Styler also had a tiebreak win in his first set at the top spot of the lineup, 10-8, and then held on for a 7-5 triumph in the final set for his sixth win in a row. Nick Beaty rounded out the sweep with a comeback victory at No. 6. After dropping his first set 4-6, Beaty battled back two consecutive 6-3 wins for his team-leading ninth win in a row.
The Wolverines hit the road next weekend when they travel to Illinois on Friday (April 1), with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
