HENDERSON, Nev. -- Graduate student Brendan O'Reilly's season-best 215 (-1) guided the University of Michigan men's golf team to a spring season-opening 877 54-hole total and a 10th-place finish at Coastal Carolina's Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate, which concluded today (Wednesday, March 2) at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
As O'Reilly opened with an even-par 72, freshman Hunter Thomson fired his seventh sub-par round with a 70 (-2). With those two tallies and senior Patrick Sullivan's 71 (-1) leading the way, the Wolverines etched a 290 (+2) in Monday's opening round, positioning themselves tied for ninth.
Using three birdies in his second round, O'Reilly carded a season-low 70 (-2), and sophomore Jude Kim shot 73 (+1) as U-M totaled a 293 to drop a spot to 10th with a 583 two-day score.
Sullivan's 72 (E) and O'Reilly's 73 (+1) helped the Maize and Blue to a closing 294 for an 877 event total and 10th-place showing to open the spring.
Paced by his season-best 70, O'Reilly tied for 21st with a season-best 215 (72-70-73, -1). Playing as an individual, sophomore Will Anderson also tied for 21st as he progressively lowered his score for his 215 (73-72-70, -1). After his opening 70, Thomson posted back-to-back 74s to tie for 32nd (218). Rounding out U-M's top finishers, Sullivan tied for 37th at 219 as he wrapped rounds of 71 and 72 around 76 in the second round.
The Wolverines will close out their spring-break trip by hosting the Desert Mountain Collegiate, Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6) in Scottsdale, Ariz. The two-day, 54-hole event will feature a 15-team field playing at the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain.
