COLUMBUS, Ohio -- University of Michigan junior Sierra Brooks was named the 2022 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, the conference announced Saturday evening (March 19) following the conclusion of the Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships.
It marks the 13th time a Wolverine has earned the honor, and Brooks is the first U-M recipient since Paige Zaziski was named the B1G Gymnast of the Year in 2018.
The junior all-arounder joins the company of Beth Wymer (1992, '94, '95), Wendy Marshall (1996), Sarah Cain (1997, 2000), Elise Ray (2005), Lindsey Bruck (2008), Kylee Botterman (2011), Joanna Sampson (2013), Nicole Artz (2017) and Zaziski (2018).
Brooks won 14 individual titles during the regular season, including three all-around titles, and was a two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Week in the 2022 season. The Plainfield, Ill., native brought home two or more event titles on three different occasions this year and set career highs on three events.
The junior became the 13th Wolverine to earn a 10.0 on vault as she accomplished the feat at Nebraska while also taking home the floor exercise title with a career-best 9.975. Furthermore, Brooks earned a career-best 9.950 on the uneven bars against Michigan State to win the title and collected the vault, balance beam and all-around titles against the Spartans.
Heading into the postseason, Brooks led the Big Ten in the all-around while ranking second on the vault. Nationally, Brooks ranks fourth in the all-around, fifth on the floor, and sixth on the vault.
Outside of the gym, Brooks is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president and was named a team captain for the 2022 season.
Brooks and the rest of the Michigan squad will wait to learn the location of their NCAA Regional on Tuesday (March 22). Regionals are set to start Thursday, March 31, with the finals set for Saturday, April 2.
