
Groumi Claims First Gold at Big Tens; U-M Remains Third

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed three medals (one gold, one silver and one bronze) on the second day of the Big Ten Championships on Thursday (Feb. 24) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines finished the second day of the Big Ten Championships with 408 points and are in third place. Ohio State sits in first place with 487.5 points, with Indiana just behind in second (449 points).
Jake Mitchell started the second day of competition for Michigan in the 500 free claiming the silver medal with a time of 4:12.88, setting a personal best and nabbing a B-cut. Patrick Callan finished sixth in the A-final, Connor Hunt finished 11th and Bora Unalmis finished 16th overall, grabbing major points for the Wolverines.
In the 200-yard IM, Gal Groumi claimed the first gold medal for the Wolverines, setting a new personal best time of 1:41.54. Right behind Groumi was Jared Daigle, who nabbed the bronze medal with a new personal best time of 1:43.63.
Ross Todd finished fifth in the consolation final and 13th overall with a score of 344.10 on the one-meter springboard, while Cameron Gammage finished 17th with a score of 309.80.
In the final individual event on the day, Cam Peel finished in fifth, Bence Szabados in the sixth, Will Chan in eighth, James LeBuke tied for 18th, Niklas Eberly tied for 20th, and River Wright finished in 22nd in the 50 free.
The quartet of Nadav Aaronson, Will Chan, Gal Groumi, and Cam Peel finished fourth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:05.44.
The 400 medley relay team collected the only A-cut time of day while ten Wolverines collected ten B-cut times.
The Big Ten Championships will resume Friday (Feb. 25) with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
