
Wolverines to Seek Third Straight Big Ten Championship in West Lafayette

The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team will begin its postseason this week at the 2022 Big Ten Championships, beginning Wednesday (Feb. 23) and running through Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Indiana. The meet will begin with two relays on Wednesday at 5 p.m., while each of the following three days will see preliminaries at 10 a.m. and event finals at 5:30 p.m. Diving preliminaries will begin at noon.
The Wolverines will be competing for their 43rd team title, the most of any program in the Big Ten. All of the championship sessions will be streamed live on B1G+.
Team Notes
• One of six Big Ten Conference programs ranked in the TYR/CSCAA Top 25 poll, No. 13-ranked Michigan concluded the duals season with a 6-1 record -- its only blemish on the road at Ohio State two weeks ago (Jan. 28).
• In dual competition, the Wolverines defeated Oakland (189-105), No. 14 Missouri (193-106), Purdue (192-107), Grand Valley State (142-95), Minnesota (188.5-110.5), and Wisconsin (182-116) before falling on the road to No. 14 Ohio State by a score of 111-189.
• U-M's 200-yard medley relay team and 800-yard freestyle relay team will look to repeat as gold medal winners in the relay events, while sophomore Jake Mitchell (500-yard freestyle) will look to defend his individual title.

Big Ten Championships History
Titles: Michigan has won 42 Big Ten Conference team championships, the most of any conference member (Indiana is second with 26). In total, U-M has won 537 individual, relay or diving titles -- 383 in individual swimming events, 135 on relays and 19 in diving.
Last Year: The Wolverines entered the last day of competition 26.5 points behind Indiana and only 10 points ahead of third-place Ohio State. By the end of the day, it had the team title in its grasp, a feat that could not have been accomplished if not for its performance on Saturday morning during preliminaries. Over the five days in Columbus, Ohio, U-M won three Big Ten individual or relay titles, set 49 new career bests and saw 11 swimmers etch their names on the program's all-time top performers list. Awards: A Michigan swimmer has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in 20 of the last 28 seasons: Marcel Wouda (1993), Tom Dolan (1994-95), Derya Buyukuncu (1996), John Piersma (1997), Tom Malchow (1998), Chris Thompson (1999 (co), 2001), Dan Ketchum (2002), Peter Vanderkaay (2004 [co], 2005, 2006 [co]), Alex Vanderkaay (2008), Tyler Clary (2009-10), Dan Madwed (2012), Connor Jaeger (2013-14), Dylan Bosch (2015) and Felix Auböck (2017, 2020).
Seventeen student-athletes have been named Big Ten Freshman of the Year: Scott Ryan (1988), Gustavo Borges (1992), Royce Sharp (1993), Tom Dolan (1994), Jason Lancaster (1995), Chris Thompson (1998), Jeff Hopwood and Tim Siciliano (1999), Dan Ketchum (2001), Brendan Neligan (2002), Peter Vanderkaay (2003), Kyle Whitaker (2011), Dylan Bosch (2014), Evan White (2015), Felix Auböck (2017), Ricardo Vargas (2018) and Jake Mitchell (2021).
