
Daigle and Mitchell Finish 1-2 in 400 IM on Day Three of Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team remains in third place heading into the final day of competition at the 2022 Big Ten Championships after claiming three medals (one gold, one silver, and one bronze) on the third day of action on Friday (Feb. 25) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines finished the third day of the Big Ten Championships with 756.5 points and are in third place. Indiana remains in first place with 972.5 points, with Ohio State just behind in second (940.5 points).
Gal Groumi sprinted to his second medal of the Big Ten Championships with a blistering 45.01 time in the 100-yard fly, which set a new personal best. Bence Szabados and River Wright picked up major points in the B-final, finishing tenth and 15th overall, while Charlie Morici posted a personal best time of 45.98 to finish 17th and Eric Storms finished tied for 19th.
In the 400 IM, Jared Daigle was in control from start to finish as he picked up his second medal and first gold of the Championships with a personal best time of 3:41.01. Jake Mitchell out split the entire field by one second on his final 50-yard free to claim the silver with a personal best time of 3:41.39. In the B-final, Bora Unalmis finished second and Connor Hunt finished fourth. AJ Bornstein, the lone Wolverine in the C-final, finished 22nd overall.
Patrick Callan and James LeBuke both bested their prelim times in the 200 free to finish sixth and 15th overall respectively.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Will Chan picked up a fourth place finish and Mason Hunter finished eighth in the A-final. AJ Bornstein finished second in the C-final and 18th overall with a time of 54.31.
Cameron Gammage moved up three spots to finish 11th in the 3-meter springboard competition after posting a score of 402.00 in the consolation final. Ross Todd finished with a score of 364.25 to finish 17th.
The quartet of Cam Peel, Will Chan, Bence Szabados, and Niklas Eberly finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:17.04 to collect an A-cut.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team collected the only A-cut time of day while 13 Wolverines collected ten B-cut times.
The Big Ten Championships will resume Saturday (Feb. 26) with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
