LAREDO, Texas -- Paced by senior Patrick Sullivan's tie for 36th place, the University of Michigan men's golf team opened its spring season with a 913 54-hole total and 12th place finish Tuesday (Feb. 15) at Houston's Broder Olympics at the Laredo Country Club.
After a strong start, opening with a 70 (-2) -- with five birdies -- from Sullivan and a 73 (+1) from sophomore Will Anderson, the Wolverines opened their spring season with a 296 tally. Heading back out for the day's second 18, freshman Bavake Sihota used three birdies to card a career-low 73 (+1) as the Maize and Blue closed the day with a 300 to position itself 11th with a 597 total.
However, U-M was informed graduate student Brendan O'Reilly's second-round 73 would not count because he was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. In the final round, he bounced back pacing the Wolverines with a team-best 75 as U-M closed with a 313 to finish 12th with a 913 tournament total.
Sullivan led the Wolverines for the first time this season with his tie for 34th after posting a 227 (70-77-80). Anderson was one shot back at 228 (73-77-78) as he tied for 43rd, while Sihota rounded out Michigan's top three with a 229 (76-73-80) as he tied for 49th.
In the first of two events during Michigan's spring break, the Wolverines will be out west for the nine-day trip. U-M opens the week playing in Coastal Carolina's Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate, Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 28-March 2 at the Reflections Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. The trip will close with the Wolverines hosting the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 5-6) in Scottsdale, Ariz.
