ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Select members of the Michigan swimming and diving program concluded competition in the second and final day of action at the Michigan First Chance Meet on Sunday (Feb. 13) at Canham Natatorium. Races began in the morning before time trials ended the schedule in the afternoon session.
Racing in two sessions, several swimmers continued building on the momentum they established on Saturday (Feb. 12), hitting a number of NCAA qualifying marks while improving on career-best times. Fifth-year senior Spencer Carl made the biggest jump on either roster, vaulting from No. 17 in the Big Ten to sixth in the 200-yard butterfly during the morning session. Carl set personal best time at 1:43.31 three seconds below the NCAA 'B' standard time.
Session three started off with the Men's 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Jacque Wenger set a career-best time of 1:44.72, a NCAA 'B' standard time. Wenger followed up in the afternoon with a career-best 48.52 in the 100-yard backstroke.
The 100-yard freestyle was second in the morning session with four Wolverines in the field. Sophomore Juan Ceresa timed a career-best 44.55. Junior Andrew Trepanier swam a 50-yard freestyle during the race and beat his career-best time set Saturday with a 20.11.
Trepanier raced again in the 50-yard freestyle time trial, finishing .04 seconds off his time from a few weekends prior, but freshman Parker Nolan turned in a career-best time of 20.87.
Junior Jack McCurdy clocked a personal-best 1:57.41 in the 200-yard breaststroke, another NCAA 'B' Standard time and the No. 11 time in the Big Ten this season. McCurdy added his second career-best and NCAA 'B' qualifying time of the day in the afternoon, this time in the 100-yard breaststroke (53.90). McCurdy moved up to 14th in the Big Ten rankings.
Freshman Jack Callan led the way for in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle in the early session with the 13th-best time in the Big Ten this season at 15:22.18, marking Callan's career best and another NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Sophomore Yugo Tsukikawa also set a career-best time in the race with a 15:46.40. Tsukikawa followed up with a career-best 1:47.56 in the 200-yard butterfly during the afternoon session, less than a second off the 'B' standard.
The Big Ten Championships are up next for the Maize and Blue. Competition runs from Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 26-29, in West Lafayette, Ind.
