STILLWATER, Okla. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team finished the 2002 season with a 29th-place finish Saturday (Nov. 19) at the NCAA Cross Country Championships at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
Michigan got off to a fast start but was unable to continue it and settled in for a battle for the last few spots.
Senior Tom Brady finished in 60th place, taking the top spot for Michigan with a time of 29:51.1, a new career best. Brady got off to a fast start and was in the top 25 for the first 4K of the race but was unable to keep pace with the pack. Brady fell back to 69th overall going to the final kilometer but ended up passing nine other runners on his way to the finish line.
The next Wolverine across the finish line was junior Zach Stewart, who finished 153rd with a time of 30:37.8. Graduate student Arjun Jha took a tumble early in the race along with many other competitors. He was able to fight his way back, gaining 65 spots from the 1K mark to the finish line, including 40 runners over the last two two kilometers.
In his first NCAA Championships, freshman Luke Venhuizen was the fourth Wolverines across the finish line, ending up in 226th place with a time of 31:31.4. The final counting finisher for the Wolverines was junior Oli Raimond, who started out strong but after a few kilometers fell back in the pack. Over the final few kilometers, he was able to fight for final few positions over the final five kilometers, finishing 230th overall.
At two kilometers, the top 215 competitors were separated by only 20 seconds, with the gap widening to 48 seconds after four kilometers. One minute, 49 seconds separated the top 215 at the eight-kilometer mark, with it widening to 2:34 at the finish line.
With the cross country season now complete, the Wolverine distance runners will join their sprint, jump and throw teammates in turning their attention toward the indoor track and field season that will begin in January. A full schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
