EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Michigan State Spartans in front of 3,022 fans, the largest women's soccer crowd in DeMartin Stadium history, on Sunday (Oct. 9) in East Lansing.
Michigan State led the shot category 5-0 in the early going, with Michigan registering its first shot on frame in the 24th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Avery Kalitta fed a ball from the center of the park to the right wing. The service was played in to junior Sammi Woods, who took a touch at the top of the box and attempted to place a shot far post that skipped just wide.
Graduate student goalkeeper Izzy Nino made four saves on the afternoon, with the highlight coming in the 27th minute. Sprawling to her right, Nino denied a Spartan effort, tipping the shot over the cross bar.

The match was broken open in the 40th minute as Spartan Jordyn Wickes cashed in a service from Lauren DeBeau to give MSU the 1-0 advantage.
At the intermission, U-M (6-5-3, 1-3-2 B1G) trailed in the corner kick category by a 5-0 margin and was being outshot 10-2.
Coming out of the half, U-M earned a chance off a set piece. The service from the right wing was played in by junior Sarah Bridenstine into the box and found the foot of Kalitta, but her chance was pushed wide right.
MSU (10-1-3, 5-0-1 B1G) doubled its lead in the 65th, as DeBeau converted on a scissor kick 10 yards out top center.
The two sides were even in the shot category at 6-6 in the second half, though MSU had a 16-8 lead in the category overall. U-M's eight shots proved to be the second-lowest total of the season.
The Wolverines were issued a pair of cautions in each half. The 24th minute saw a card given to senior Dani Wolfe and graduate student Margot Ridgeway in the 34th. In the second half, Kalitta (76th) and junior Kacey Lawrence (81st) each earned their own bookings.
The result caps off a three-match road swing as U-M returns home to host the No. 6-ranked Northwestern Wildcats on Thursday (Oct. 13) at 6 p.m.. The matchup, which marks U-M's first home match in nearly three weeks, will be streamed live on B1G+.
