BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team won its second Big Ten road contest of the year on Saturday (Oct. 8), dispatching of the Indiana Hoosiers 31-10 behind three touchdown passes from J.J. McCarthy and a shutdown defensive effort.
The Wolverines (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) used three second-half touchdowns, while the defense forced Indiana (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) to punt on all five of its second half possessions to lock up its sixth victory of the season.
Michigan totaled 469 yards of offense (304 passing, 165 rushing), the fifth consecutive game in which it has gone for 400 yards or more.
McCarthy went 28-for-36 passing for 304 yards and three scores. Junior running back Blake Corum had a team-best 124 yards rushing on 25 carries and one touchdown, while Ronnie Bell led the Wolverines with 121 receiving yards and Cornelius Johnson caught a pair of TD passes to go with 58 yards receiving.
The U-M defense stifled Indiana's tempo offense to the tune of seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Michigan allowed the home team 222 total yards for the game, but was especially impressive in the second half -- giving up just 29 yards to the Hoosiers (40 passing, -11 rushing). Michael Barrett and Junior Colson tallied seven tackles and one sack each, whole Rod Moore had six tackles and one interception.
Michigan opened the game on offense and used a 50-yard run from Corum to get to the one-yard line before he drove the ball into the end zone on the ensuing play to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead on their opening drive. Indiana responded with a touchdown of its own on its second possession before U-M used a 44-yard field goal from Jake Moody to take a 10-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Hoosiers looked to take the lead on touchdown pass early in the second quarter, but a review resulted in a Hoosiers offensive pass interference call and IU was forced to settle for a 41-yard field goal. The Michigan defense stepped up as Moore intercepted a Connor Bazelak pass with 9:54 left in the first half. The pick was the second of the season for Moore.
The game remained deadlocked at 10 heading into the halftime break after Mike Morris blocked an Indiana field goal attempt with 3:17 left in the second quarter, and the U-M defense stopped the Hoosiers on their own 45-yard line in their final possession of the first half.
U-M took possession of the ball on its own two-yard line with 12:16 left on the third-quarter clock, and marched 98 yards on 11 plays, capped off a with a McCarthy 29-yard pass completion to Johnson, who juked his defender and dove into the end zone. The Wolverines led 17-10 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Michigan offense added two final touchdowns -- a nine-yard pass from McCarthy to Luke Schoonmaker and a six-yard McCarthy hookup with Johnson -- to its tally to seal the victory.
U-M returns to Michigan Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 15) to host No. 10 Penn State. The game is set for a noon kickoff on Fox.
