
Wolverine Women Sit Third After First Day of Season-Opening SMU Classic

DALLAS, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team kicked off the 2022-23 campaign with a strong showing on the first night at the SMU Classic on Friday (Oct. 7) at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center. The Wolverines (134 points) trail Louisville (150) and USC (142) heading into the final day of competition.
The Maize and Blue kicked off the meet with a third-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, as the team of Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Katie Crom and Lindsay Flynn touched the wall to finished in a time of 3:35.19.
The best finishes on the night came from Kathryn Ackerman in the 400 IM (1:28.47), Flynn in the 50-yard freestyle (22.52) and Chung in the 100-yard backstroke (53.80), all finishing second in their respective events. Devon Kitchel touched the wall first in the B-final of the 400 IM in a time of 4:11.98. Joining Flynn in the 50 free was Claire Newman, who fished 11th in a time of 22.90 seconds. In the 100 back, Ackerman finished 13th with a time of 56.36.
On the diving front, Lucy Hogan finished fourth on the three-meter springboard with a score of 289.20.
In the 200 free, Megan Glass sprinted to a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:48.36, and Crom touched the wall first in the B-final with a time of 1:47.06. Crom was the fastest Wolverine in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 53.52 to finish third.
In the final two events of the night, Sim finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the quartet of Crom, Glass, Newman and Ackerman bolted to a third-place finish in the 800 free relay (7:17.31).
The Wolverines will return to the pool Saturday (Oct. 8) for day two of the SMU Classic, beginning at 11 a.m. CDT, and the meet will be streamed live on SMU's PonyUp TV. Michigan also heads to Rochester, Mich., to face off against Oakland on Saturday at noon in a dual meet.
