EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After a back-and-forth first half, the University of Michigan men's basketball team went cold to start the second and could not rally as the Wolverines fell 83-67 to No. 10 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29) at Breslin Center.
Michigan State (16-4, 7-2 Big Ten) shot 55.4 percent from the field and 50 percent (9-for-18) from long range, while U-M struggled, shooting 37.1 percent (23-for-62) and 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from beyond the arc. Sophomore Hunter Dickinson led U-M with his 25 points, his fourth 20+ point game in his last five contests, while adding six rebounds. Freshman Moussa Diabate nearly posted a double-double after his 11 points and nine rebounds (five offensive), while classmate Caleb Houstan posted his fourth straight double-digits scoring game with 11 points.
Coming out of the first media timeout of the first half, the Wolverines went on an 8-0 run that featured a ferocious dunk from Diabate, to take a 14-8 lead. Michigan followed with strong ball pressure, causing Michigan State to turn the ball over three times in two minutes, including two steals and a block. However, MSU managed to chip away at the lead to make it a 16-14 heading into the media break.
With the game tied, East Lansing native Brandon Johns Jr. sparked a small 4-0 scoring run to help the Wolverines retake the lead. The Spartans countered with a 6-0 scoring run to reclaim the lead, 24-22. With seven lead changes and seven ties in the first half, MSU ended the first half with a 5-0 run, to head into the break leading 39-35.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Spartans' energy helped tem double their lead with a quick 6-0 run, while the Wolverines struggled out of the half going 2-for-12 over the first nine minutes. MSU built a 15-point lead, converting 10 points on second-chance opportunities and off U-M turnovers.
With Houstan and Kobe Bufkin hitting three-pointers, Michigan State responded with four straight points to maintain a lead of 15 points or more midway through the second half. Every U-M run was countered with the Spartans rallying behind their solid shooting, and MSU led by as many as 19 points on its way to a 16-point victory.
