Hillmon's Double-Double Powers Michigan Past Purdue

» Naz Hillmon tallied her second 30-point game of the season, finishing with 32 points on 12-for-14 shooting from the floor and 12 rebounds.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team ran its winning streak to five on the strength of a 32-point, 12-rebound performance from Naz Hillmon in a 79-66 victory over Purdue Monday evening (Jan. 24) at Crisler Center.
Hillmon tallied her second 30-point game of the season and seventh of her career, going 12-for-14 from the floor and 8-for-10 at the line. Emily Kiser nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Leigha Brown completed Michigan's double-figure scorers, going for 13 points, six assists and three rebounds. U-M handed out a season-high 23 assists in the game.
With Michigan facing a 15-14 deficit at the 2:28 mark of the first quarter, Hillmon converted on a three-point play on Michigan's next possession to push the Wolverines in front, 17-15 just 18 seconds later. Hillmon scored again on the next Michigan possession with Purdue only managing a free throw the rest of the quarter as U-M led 19-16 after 10 minutes.
Michigan got nine points from Brown in the second quarter and outscored the Boilers by four, 19-15, in the period.
U-M hit the half with a 38-31 lead on the Boilers behind 18 first-half points from Hillmon. U-M shot 51.6 percent from the floor (16-for-31) in the half, again paced by Hillmon's 8-for-8 effort.
Michigan scored first to start the third quarter on a Kiser to Hillmon layup, but Purdue answered with seven straight points to close within two, 40-38, 7:52 remaining in the quarter. Kiser stemmed the tide with a layup from Brown on Michigan's next possession, but Purdue answered again to stay within two.
Maddie Nolan hit back-to-back triples, the second pushing Michigan's lead back to eight, 48-40, with 6:22 left in the third.
With Purdue still hanging around in the latter stages of the third, Michigan embarked on an 8-0 run behind baskets from Brown, Laila Phelia, Nolan and Hillmon for its first double-figure lead of the second half. Purdue scored the final three points of the period, sending Michigan to the fourth with a 59-50 lead.
After the teams exchanged baskets to start the fourth, Amy Dilk made good on a nifty layup for a 65-54 lead and Purdue timeout with 7:43 to go.
U-M stayed in control from there, leading by as many as 17 points and its lead never dipping below 11 the rest of the way.
Michigan is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 27), traveling to Columbus to face the Buckeyes. The game has been moved to 7 p.m. and will air on the Big Ten Network.
