ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Seniors Abby Brenner and Abby Heiskell, along with junior Sierra Brooks were voted tri-captains for the 2021-22 University of Michigan women's gymnastics team.
Brenner enters her second year as a team captain as she was one of three captains in the 2020-21 campaign. The rising senior was a consistent competitor on three events for the Wolverines before missing half of the season due to injury. Brenner returned to compete on the uneven bars at the NCAA Championship, scoring a 9.9250 to help Michigan to its first-ever national title.
"I am so honored to be chosen as a captain for my second year," said Brenner. "Leading Team 45 was pretty incredible! Being a captain is more than just a role, it is about making a difference and leading our team to its ultimate goals. We have big plans for Team 46 this season."
Heiskell burst onto the stage this past season for the Maize and Blue and entered the all-around lineup for the first time at the regional meet to help lift the Wolverines to a national title. Heiskell garnered four All-America nods in 2021 (one regular-season, three postseason) and notched first team All-Big Ten honors. She also was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week for the first time in her career and was named to the Big Ten All-Championship team. The junior won three event titles (two vault, one floor exercise) and was clutch at the national championship as her final beam routine clinched the title for the Wolverines.
"I am honored that my team put their trust in me to help lead them through this next year," said Heiskell. "I am looking forward to working together with everyone so that we can win another national championship."
Brooks had an impressive sophomore season for the Wolverines, earning six All-America citations with two for the regular season and four during her standout performance at the NCAA Championships. The sophomore all-arounder was a regional champion on the beam and in the all-around while sharing the vault title with freshman Naomi Morrison. Brooks was named first team All-Big ten and earned 13 event titles in 2021 (six vault, four all-around, two beam, one uneven bars).
"I am super excited for this upcoming year and I am honored to have been chosen as one of this year's captains," said Brooks. "We have such an amazing team with so much talent, and after this phenomenal last year, there is so much more potential and even higher goals for us to set as a program."
