AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Michigan men's basketball guard/forward Franz Wagner was named to the Division I first team of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America team on Friday (May 28).
In addition to Wagner, the first team included Corey Kispert (Gonzaga), who was also named the Member of the Year, Max Abmas (Oral Roberts), Ian DuBose (Wake Forest) and Matt Pile (Nebraska Omaha). Wagner was joined by Nebraska's Kobe Webster (third team) as the only Big Ten selections.
After earning CoSIDA Academic All-District first team honors earlier in May, Wagner becomes the seventh Wolverine in history to earn the prestigious academic honor. He joins Steve Grote (1975, 2nd; 1976, 1st; 1977, 2nd), Marty Bodnar (1980, 3rd; 1981, 1st), Paul Heuerman (1981, 2nd), Mark Bodnar (1981, 3rd), Dan Pelekoudas (1982, 4th; 1984, Honorable Mention) and Zack Novak (2012, 3rd).
Wagner, who announced he would be leaving early for the 2021 NBA Draft, was studying toward a degree in organizational studies. He was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2021 and is a two-time U-M Academic Achievement honoree. In 2020, he was honored as the U-M Academic Success Program's Male Rookie of the Year.
In his two seasons with the Wolverines, Wagner started 55 consecutive games and finished with 661 points (12.0 ppg), 334 rebounds (6.1 rpg), 33 double-figure scoring games (six 20+) and four double-doubles.
In 2020-21, Wagner helped the Maize and Blue to a 23-5 record and the program's 15th Big Ten championship with a 14-3 record. The All-Big Ten second teamer had a career season as he averaged 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, led U-M with 35 steals, and was second with 29 blocks. As a freshman, Wagner earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team after averaging 11.6 points and 5.6 rebounds.
