CARMEL, Ind. -- With three 76s and two 77s tallied by Wolverines in the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted its Big Ten Tournament-best team total of 305 Sunday (May 2) to finish 13th with a 934 championship total at the Crooked Stick Golf Club.
After strong 20-mph winds hampered play for the 14-team field in Friday's opening 18, U-M used a team tournament-low 74 (+2) from senior Charlie Pilon to post a 319 team total and position itself in 14th. As the winds broke for Saturday's second round, the Maize and Blue dropped nine shots to tally a 310 team total as graduate student Brent Ito and freshman Will Anderson each carded 76s and helped the Wolverines move up one spot to 13th.
As Anderson, junior Patrick Sullivan and freshman Jude Kim carded 76s, while Ito and Pilon had 77s, the Wolverines dropped an additional five shots to close the championships with a 305 and stay 13th with a 934 54-hole total.
Ito and Pilon used their experience to lead the Wolverines as they both tied for 34th with 231 tallies in their final conference tournament. Ito fired rounds of 78, 76 and 77, while Pilon had tallies of 74, 80 and 77. Pilon led the tournament field with 40 pars in his 54 holes, while Ito had 33.
Anderson recovered from his opening 81 with back-to-back 76s as he tied for 42nd at 233. After subbing in for freshman Jack O'Donnell for the second round, Kim made his first appearance for the Wolverines since mid-February. He responded with a 79 in the second round before using five birdies to fire a career-low 76 in the final round. Sullivan tied for 62nd at 243 (86-79-76).
Following the Wolverines finish at the Big Ten Tournament, their season has concluded.
