LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team recorded its seventh shutout of the season, a 4-0 win over Minnesota, on Friday (April 30) at the Dillon Tennis Center in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.
Nino Ehrenschneider and Connor Johnston remained undefeated in doubles with a 6-2 win at No. 3. The pair now has played in five matches and is 3-0. Ondrej Styler and Patrick Maloney secured the doubles point for the Wolverines with a 6-3 victory to run their doubles record to 2-0. Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar led 6-5 at No. 1 before the match was abandoned.
Fenty made quick work of Vlad Lobak at No. 2 singles, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 before all six first sets were completed.
Nick Beaty improved his season singles record to 19-4, caprtuing a win at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3 over Sebastian Vile. Beaty closed hard in his second set, winning the last three points after being knotted at 3-3.
Jacob Bickersteth secured the match, taking No. 6 singles and winning his fifth consecutive match. Tied 3-3 in the first set, he rattled off the last three points to take the set. In the second, he never trailed for a 6-4 victory.
Ondrej Styler, Patrick Maloney and Mattias Siimar had all first sets in hand before their matches were abandoned following Bickersteth clinching the team match.
Michigan will take on West No. 1 seed Illinois on Saturday (May 1) at 2 p.m. CDT. The winner of that match will face the winner of Saturday's other semifinal matchup between Ohio State and Nebraska on Sunday (May 2) in the tournament final.
