ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior third baseman Taylor Bump knocked out a two-run homer in the third inning and junior RHP Alex Storako made it hold up as the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned a 2-0 decision to claim the weekend series against Northwestern on Sunday (April 25) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Bump broke open an early pitchers' duel with her two-out home run in the third, boasting her sixth long ball in 10 games with a shot to the right-field grandstand. Senior shortstop Natalia Rodriguez also scored on the home run after reaching with a single to left.
Michigan (24-5, 24-5 Big Ten) put two in scoring position to threaten again in the sixth inning, reaching on a leadoff single from senior first baseman Lou Allan and double to the right-field wall from junior catcher Hannah Carson, but could not produce another run. Bump and Allan led the Wolverines with two hits apiece.
Storako (15-2) tossed a four-hit shutout -- her sixth of the season -- and struck out 10 Northwestern (22-10, 22-10 Big Ten) batters while allowing one walk. Three of Northwestern's hits came in the first three innings before Storako found her groove; she did not allow a base runner past first over the final four frames.
Michigan will head to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State in its first of back-to-back weekend road trips. The four-game set starts with a 5 p.m. slate on Friday (April 30) at the Nittany Lions' Beard Field.
