STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan softball team got big production from seniors Lou Allan and Taylor Bump at the heart of its order to earn a 7-1 win in the series opener against Penn State on Friday evening (April 30) at Beard Field.
Allan and Bump combined for four hits, including three doubles, and drove in five of U-M's seven runs against Penn State (5-23, 5-23 Big Ten). The duo posted consecutive run-scoring doubles to open scoring in the third inning and went back-to-back with RBI hits again in the seventh to highlight the Wolverines' four-run frame.
Senior LHP Meghan Beaubien (10-3) was superb from the circle, fanning 10 -- her most strikeouts in seven appearances -- while allowing just one hit and two walks through six shutout innings. Senior RHP Sarah Schaefer tacked on two more strikeouts in the seventh, while allowing a one-out solo homer.
Michigan (25-5, 25-5 Big Ten) took advantage of free bases and defensive miscues to break through with two outs in the third. With two in scoring position, Allan laced a double over the head of the PSU center fielder to post her ninth multi-RBI game of the season before Bump followed suit just two pitches later, scoring Allan with her own double to the center-field wall.
The Wolverines left the bases loaded in the fourth and then were retired in order in both the fifth and sixth frames before breaking the game open with their four-spot in the seventh. A swirling wind, which picked up in intensity over the course of the game, wreaked some havoc on the PSU outfielders as fly balls from sophomore Lauren Esman and Allan both dropped and allowed runs the score. Allan picked up her second double of the day, and Bump again followed with an RBI single down the right-field line. Sophomore Audrey LeClair capped the Wolverine scoring with an RBI single to center -- her first collegiate hit and RBI.
Michigan will resume its weekend road series against Penn State on Saturday (May 1) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Beard Field. Both games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
