RICHMOND, Va. -- Junior Maggie MacNeil of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team earned a pair of postseason honors on Tuesday (March 23). She was named D-I Swimmer of the Year by the Collegiate Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) in the morning, and later in the day she was announced as a repeat selection for Big Ten Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year.
MacNeil receives the prestigious awards on the heels of a history-making performance at last week's NCAA Championships, where she helped the Wolverines finish in sixth place. She established a new NCAA record in the 100-yard butterfly last Friday (March 19), becoming the first woman in history to dip under 49 seconds for the race. MacNeil followed up that performance with a win in the 100-yard freestyle (46.02) on Saturday, becoming the third-fastest performer in history.
She also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.17) and swam on four relay teams. On Thursday, she led off the 400-yard medley relay in 49.76, becoming the second swimmer in history to break 50 seconds in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.
At the Big Ten Championships, MacNeil won the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly as well as swimming a leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. She was named the Swimmer of the Championships for the second year in a row.
Through three years at U-M, MacNeil is a 19-time CSCAA All-American and 14-time Big Ten Conference champion. She has already provisionally qualified to represent Canada at this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.
